Naythen Lowe, a 10th grade student at Cambridge Charter School, Cambridge, MA and a participating student at the Community Art Center in Cambridge, has taken his first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning the 5th annual Arlington International Film Festival (AIFF) Poster Contest. As the winner of the contest, Naythen’s design will become the international face of the 2015 Festival.
Lowe’s poster was chosen from among the more than 50 entries submitted to the annual AIFF Poster Contest. Lowe, at 16 years of age is also an aspiring filmmaker and has been part of the Teen Media Program (TMP) at the Community Art Center in Cambridge for the past two years. As a member of the Video Studio Class at TMP, his films have focused on topics ranging from social justice to comedy. He is part of the DIYDS! crew, has co-designed T-shirts for the DIYDS! festival and is part of their selection committee that picks the best films to be screened out of the 150 youth films submitted.
The AIFF Jury, which is composed of professionals in the fields of art, marketing and graphic design, convened on February 7th at Arlington Community Media, Inc. in Arlington, MA. Judges, Larry Blumsack, Jennifer DesAutels, Marc Gurton, Steven Jurgensmeyer and Niloufer Moochhala chose Mr. Lowe’s design for its originality, marketability, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “multiculturalism.” On March 12th the AIFF Poster Contest Award Reception and Press Announcement was held at Arlington Town Hall where Lowe’s winning design was unveiled and he was presented a check for five hundred dollars by Vicky Giannakas, Manager of the Arlington Branch of the Watertown Savings Bank. As the flash from cameras captured the moment, Lowe said “after working for the first time with design software my teacher asked me if I wanted to design a poster for the AIFF Poster Contest and I said “SURE!”.
With the founding of AIFF in 2010, the Poster Contest was the first project to spin-off , connecting film with the arts. Consistent with its mission to nurture the next generation of filmmakers, AIFF is delighted to be the conduit for creativity and expression not only through filmmaking but also graphic design.
